How Should Solid Tires be Cared for in Winter?

2025-09-01

Driving technique is only one aspect of driving on icy and snowy roads in winter. Overall vehicle performance and the choice of solid tire are also important considerations.

So, how should solid tires be cared for in winter?

Some people believe that because tire pressure is low in winter, it's necessary to increase the contact area between the solid tire and the road, thereby increasing friction and improving safety. However, this idea is no longer applicable today. Tire pressure used to be high, and lowering it in winter was the right approach. However, due to increased comfort demands, normal tire pressure is already very low. Lowering it further can easily damage solid tires. Therefore, it's best to maintain the standard pressure in winter.

Regardless of the season, routine maintenance of solid tires is essential. Regularly inspect for punctures, cuts, and aging or cracking of the valve stem rubber. If any problems are found, repair or replace them promptly to prevent running low on air.

Frequently clean the tread to prevent any hard material from becoming lodged in the tread, which could lead to rupture or deflation. During driving, foreign objects such as gravel will inevitably become lodged in the tread. If not removed promptly, some will fall out on their own over time, while others will become increasingly lodged, becoming lodged deeper and deeper in the tread. When solid tires are worn to a certain degree, small stones can puncture the carcass, causing air leaks or even blowouts.

In winter, pay attention to aging and tread wear. If cracks or severe tread wear occur, repair the tire promptly. If the inside and outside of a solid tire are worn differently, rotate the tire regularly. Avoid using solid tires of different brands or tread patterns.
