Motorcycle Tire Maintenance and Care

With a good set of tires, you can enjoy the thrill of riding your motorcycle to the fullest. However, many riders focus only on engine and appearance maintenance, neglecting motorcycle tire care, which shortens tire lifespan and increases costs. Therefore, mastering some basic maintenance and care tips can not only save money but also reduce many problems caused by tire issues while riding.

Statistics show that the number of motorcycle tire replacements and repairs in the same period is related to individual riding skills, with cost differences ranging from 10% to 30%. Tire maintenance and care can be discussed from two aspects: road conditions and human factors. However, human factors are the decisive factor. Road conditions are sometimes unavoidable, such as having to drive over ice, gravel, construction sites, and debris-strewn roads, leading to punctures and tire damage. In such cases, we can only be as careful as possible or try to take alternative routes. Below, we mainly discuss human factors.

Some young people like to perform stunts, such as U-turns in place, riding on one wheel, emergency braking, drifting around corners, and even riding a three-wheeled vehicle with one wheel lifted. They only realize the cost when it's time to replace the tires! All these practices are very damaging to tires, accelerating wear and tear, and are also detrimental to the engine. They should be avoided as much as possible. Riders should develop good riding habits, which can not only save on tires but also extend the engine's lifespan. For example: start and brake smoothly; shift gears frequently when going uphill to avoid starting from a standstill; avoid driving too aggressively over potholes; do not lend your motorcycle to people lacking riding skills; and always use the kickstand when parking to allow the motorcycle to "rest" properly. These are all effective methods for tire maintenance.

Finally, there's a point often overlooked by riders: uneven tire wear. This refers to the uneven wear on the left and right sides of the tire. Common causes include: different settings on the left and right chain tensioners, front and rear wheels not being aligned, and front and rear axles not being parallel. If a motorcyclist notices uneven tire wear, they should investigate the cause as soon as possible, make careful adjustments, and ultimately resolve the problem completely.  Uneven tire wear is extremely damaging to motorcycle tires and wears them down much faster than other types of wear. In addition, proper tire maintenance includes maintaining the correct tire pressure. If possible, the tires should be inflated to the pressure indicated on the tire itself, as tire pressure directly affects tire lifespan and performance. If low tire pressure is detected, the cause of the leak should be investigated. Is it a leak at the valve stem or a slow leak? If it's a valve stem leak, check if the valve core is leaking or if there's another reason. For a slow leak, a small amount of talcum powder (about 30g) can be injected into the tire, which can resolve the slow leak problem.
