When should you change your motorcycle tires?

2025-11-12

Here are three things you can check your tires for:

1. Check for external damage: Look for any punctures from long, thick nails, and check the motorcycle tire sidewalls for any abnormal bulges or protrusions.

2. Check for tire aging: Look for any cracks.

If these are common issues like mine, the tires are likely old and may lead to low tire pressure or even a blowout while riding.

3. Check the tread depth. Tires will have more than three wear limit indicators (T.W.I.). Branded tires are marked with small squares or small triangles.

If the tread is worn flat or has reached the minimum wear depth, you need to replace the tires immediately.

In other words, tire replacement is necessary in the following situations:

1. The motorcycle tire has reached the minimum wear limit. You frequently drive in a straight line, and the center tread shows the wear warning area, but the side treads are not severely worn.

2. Multiple bulges on the tire.

3. A nail has punctured the tire more than twice, all within a short distance of the tire repair patch. Even after repair, prolonged riding may cause a blowout.

4. A puncture to the tire sidewall. Sidewall punctures are irreparable.

This area bends and deforms when the tire rolls, easily causing the repair material to fall off.

5. Aging, with multiple small cracks.

Tire replacement can be delayed in the following situations:

1. A small nail puncture, not deep, only causing a puncture to the surface tread.

2. (Except for racing tires) After long-distance riding, the tire shows signs of "heat melting," with a small amount of "tire residue" evenly distributed. This is a normal phenomenon and nothing to worry about; continue to observe.
