How to choose tires for construction machinery? What should be paid attention to in use and maintenance?

2025-07-28

As we all know, OTR tires are widely used in various types of engineering vehicles, including but not limited to graders, loaders, rollers, dump trucks, scrapers, excavators, bulldozers, beach machines, cranes, concrete mixers and their transporters, etc. These vehicles need to work in complex and changing environments, so the durability and stability of the tires are crucial.

1. So how to choose OTR tires correctly?

Selection principles:

1) Types and specifications required by the vehicle itself: tires specified by the user; tires approved by JIS and Japan Automobile Tire Association standards.

2) Choose tires according to the operating conditions and working conditions of the vehicle, such as the selection principles for dump trucks and wheel loaders:

Vehicle Type Working Conditions Impact on tires Performance requirements Tire selection
Dump Trucks Mines (limestone), gravel sites The tire heats up slightly, but there is a high chance of punctures. Puncture resistance, abrasion resistance Deep groove, puncture-resistant tread rubber texture, Steel wire buffer layer
Mine (coal, iron ore, etc.) construction site The tire is overheated, the puncture rate is average, and the operation speed is fast Heat resistance, wear resistance, puncture resistance Normal groove, deep groove; heat-resistant tread rubber texture; radial structure
Reservoirs, civil engineering sites The tires are overheated and punctures are common Heat resistance, wear resistance, puncture resistance Normal groove, deep groove; heat-resistant tread surface; rubber texture; radial structure
Wheel Loaders Mining mines, gravel fields Original ore Tire heating is slight, punctures are frequent, and wear life is short Puncture resistance, abrasion resistance Deep groove, extra deep groove; puncture-resistant tread Rubber texture; general groove + steel wire buffer Layer, side steel wire buffer
When loading finished products from mines and gravel yards The tires heat up slightly, there are fewer punctures, and the wear life is long. Carcass durability, aging resistance Normal groove
Loading sand and gravel and transporting The tire heats up slightly, punctures are rare, and the wear life is long. Carcass durability, aging resistance, traction Normal groove, traction
During loading and transport operations The tires heat up severely, punctures are rare, and the wear life is long. Heat resistance, aging resistance Heat resistant tread rubber texture, general groove, traction

3)Things to note when choosing OTR tires: Do not mix the following different types of tires on the same axle (mixing will have a very negative impact on tire life):

Different types of tires; Tires of different specifications; Tires of different structures; Ordinary tires, anti-skid tires, anti-skid stud tires; Tires with different groove depths; Tires with different patterns.

4)The selection of inner tubes and flaps is also very important:

4.1) Inner tubes (with valves) and flaps that are suitable for tires, wheels and vehicles should be equipped. Although the inner tubes and flaps are not visible from the outside, the inner tubes play an important role in maintaining the internal air of the tire, and the flaps play an important role in protecting the inner tube.

4.2) New tires should be equipped with new inner tubes and flaps. During the wear of the tire, the inner tubes and flaps will also reach the end of their service life due to fatigue.

4.3) Use inner tubes and flaps of the same brand as the tire. Sometimes the same size tires can have different sizes due to different brands.

2. How should OTR tires be maintained during use?

1) Tire pressure

Maintaining the appropriate tire pressure is absolutely necessary to give full play to the performance of the tire and extend the life of the tire. In addition, the tire pressure should be measured after cooling.

2) Tire load

The load that a tire can bear is certain. If it exceeds the specified limit, the tire will bend and become larger, causing premature damage to the tire, and the consequences are more serious than insufficient air pressure. Therefore, do not exceed the specified loading capacity of the vehicle, and do not load the goods sideways.

3) Driving speed

Like load, tire speed has its own limits. The higher the vehicle speed, the higher the internal temperature of the tire. Exceeding the allowable temperature will cause damage such as thermal peeling due to overheating. In addition, wild driving can cause major accidents, so it is important to always maintain an appropriate operating speed.

4) Tire rotation and double-wheel assembly

Tire rotation should be carried out regularly in accordance with the vehicle's use conditions. However, when OTR tires is determined that there are signs of abnormal wear, it should be implemented as soon as possible.

5) Inspection and management of tires

Check tires for damage continuously: whether there are external injuries to the cord or cracks in the rubber; whether the cord is worn and dragged; whether it peels off; whether there is damage to the tire edge; whether the air pressure is normal, etc.

6) Inspection and management of inner tubes, flaps, and valves

In order to prevent inner tubes and flaps in poor condition from damaging tires, inner tubes and flaps should be checked regularly. For inner tubes, check strictly for abnormal growth, wrinkles, cracks, deterioration, hardening, damage, and bad valves; for flaps, check strictly for wrinkles, cracks, deterioration, hardening, damage, and deformation. If the above problems are found, they should be replaced in time.
